Four Flags Stamps
Forever 78¢ | Booklet Stamp Format

The U.S. Postal Service continues its tradition of honoring the Stars and Stripes with the issuance of Four Flags. This quartet of stamps features a bright U.S. flag against a white background. A single word appears on each of the four stamps in large letters: Freedom, Liberty, Equality, and Justice. The black typeface recalls the look of Colonial-era printing.

The current U.S. flag consists of 13 stripes and 50 stars. Congress passed legislation in 1818 stating that the number of stars on the flag should match the number of states in the Union. It also specified that new stars would be added to the flag on the July 4 after a state’s admission. The current flag’s 50th star was added on July 4, 1960, after Hawaiʻi became a state on August 21, 1959.

Drug Free USA Stamps

Purple Heart Medal Stamps

The U.S. Postal Service® continues to honor the sacrifices of the men and women who serve in the U.S. military with the issuance of the Purple Heart Medal stamp that depicts the medal suspended from its purple and white ribbon.

The Purple Heart is awarded in the name of the president of the United States to members of the U.S. military who have been wounded or killed in action. According to the Military Order of the Purple Heart, an organization for combat-wounded veterans, the medal is "the oldest military decoration in the world in present use and the first award made available to a common soldier." Established by General George Washington during the Revolutionary War, the badge of distinction for meritorious action — a heart made of purple cloth — was discontinued after the war.

In 1932, on the 200th anniversary of Washington’s birth, the decoration was reinstated and redesigned as a purple heart of metal bordered by gold, suspended from a purple and white ribbon. In the center of the medal is a profile bust of George Washington beneath his family coat of arms. The Purple Heart Medal stamp is a redesign of the 2012 Purple Heart Medal stamp and features a purple border matching the brilliant purple of the medal and its ribbon.

Patriotic Spiral Stamps

Star-Spangled Banner Stamps

The Star-Spangled Banner has been a treasured American icon ever since Francis Scott Key celebrated the sight of an American flag still flying over Fort McHenry during the War of 1812.

This stamp commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Star-Spangled Banner with a photograph of the flag that flies over Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine in Baltimore. This flag is a replica of the one that inspired Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner” after Fort McHenry withstood the British attack of September 13-14, 1814.

U.S. Flag 2022 Stamps

Reminiscent of the 50 flags encircling the Washington Monument, these three U.S. flags are shown as if on poles arranged in a circular formation. The flags, shown from a low-angle perspective, billowing in the wind, evoke a sense of reverence and honor.

A Flag for All Seasons Stamps

From the heights of sunny summer to the snowy depths of winter, Old Glory proudly waves — thanks to laws and traditions that encourage respect for our vital national symbol. Guidelines for the display and treatment of the American flag hark back to the National Flag Code adopted in 1923 at the National Flag Conference and amended a year later. A federal law in 1942 further provided specific rules for using and displaying the flag.

For more than half a century, U.S. stamps have depicted the American flag in vivid red, white, and blue. This eye-catching issuance continues that tradition with a striking graphic design of a flag.

The digital illustration by Kit Hinrichs shows a flag with crisp folds and a contemporary look, with a shadow on the small, visible portion of the back to suggest a sense of depth.

Although the American flag had appeared on U.S. stamps as far back as 1869, usually as a small element in a larger vignette, it was only in 1957 that the U.S. Post Office Department developed a quick and economical way to produce bicolor or multicolor stamps that could depict the flag in its true red, white, and blue, thanks to a special press acquired from Switzerland by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. With this 2019 stamp, the Postal Service™ celebrates the American flag, the most recognizable symbol of our nation. Since its creation in the late 18th century, the Stars and Stripes has flown proudly through war and peace, stateside and abroad, and even on the surface of the moon.
